Ballater
First impressions of Ballater can be that it is pretty flat and heather and broom dominate the edges of fairways. The ever-present River Dee gurgles its way past the southern and eastern borders of the course - without, it has to be said, ever bothering the golfer. First impressions, however, can often mislead - here’s a perfect example. Springy fairways make iron play a joy, while the quality of the greens is just superb and some great par threes are interspersed strategically along the way. The setting is exceptional. Fir-lined Craigendarroch at the northern end of the course and wooded hills rising beyond the Dee make it all refuge-like; the serenity and unique ambience of Royal Deeside - Balmoral is but ten minutes away - complete the picture
