Fishing

The North East offers a wide range of angling opportunities for visitors to the area and has a lot to offer for those looking to pit their wits against the guile of our wild fish inhabiting river, sea, lochs, fisheries or coastal estuaries. Three of the top 5 salmon rivers in Scotland are to be found in the area including the world’s top spring salmon river-the River Dee. The River Spey is arguably the finest salmon river in Scotland to fish during the summer months due to it’s excellent runs of summer salmon and the Deveron in Banffshire is a prolific salmon and sea trout river. There are other renowned salmon rivers including the Findhorn, Don, Nairn, Lossie, Ythan and Ugie.

The River Don is also considered to be one of the finest brown trout rivers in Europe and produces a great challenge to the skilled trout anglers for these long-lived fish. You can find out a bit more detail about fishing these rivers by accessing our dedicated fishing website below.

As well as offering a wide variety of game fishing in the north east there are quite a number of good coarse fishing destinations where coarse fish were stocked into lochs during Victorian times.

Excellent rainbow trout fishing can be enjoyed all year round at modern fisheries, with great bothie and refreshment facilities.

If you prefer sea angling, you're well catered for in this area too. Tiny villages and picturesque harbours are dotted along 150 miles (250 km) of beaches and often visually stunning coastline, provide an excellent base for a fishing holiday. Most of these coastal harbours contain stocks of Codling, Pollack, Saith, Conger Eels and migrant Mackerel. Many of these fishing harbours have sports fishing boats available to hire where anglers can be taken to popular offshore marks to fish.

Many visitors like to take the family to the beach for a picnic and many a happy visitor has found out how enjoyable fishing for flatfish from the beach can be. Harbour and coastal fishing provides the launching pad for many a budding anglers fishing career.

Whichever type of fishing or location you choose you will find yourself in peaceful scenic locations which are the perfect escape from the stresses of modern day life.
