Towns & Villages / Cruden bay

Golf Magazine recently ranked Cruden Bay Golf Course in the top 60 in the world. It’s easy to see why as the 18-hole championship course, designed by Tom Morris, is set against the backdrop of smoothly contoured greens and magnificent panoramic views over the district.

Throughout the late 19th century the 19th Earl of Erroll played host at Slains Castle to glittering actors, musicians and singers of the day. Amongst them Bram Stoker, who was entranced by the surrounding scenery. In 1895 Stoker began writing Dracula whilst at Cruden Bay - using Slains Castle as the inspiration for the Vampire's Transylvanian castle of terror.

Take a stroll out of the town a couple of miles north and you’ll find the Bullers o' Buchan, a marine erosion with some of the most impressive cliff-side views in Britain. The name, probably derived from 'boilers', refers to the seething waters that impact against the bottom of these majestic cliffs and caves.
