Towns & Villages / Braemar

Best known for its celebrity-packed Highland Games, which take place the first Saturday in September, Braemar is the eastern gateway to the Cairngorm Mountains.

An ideal centre for walkers and naturalists, Braemar is surrounded by mountains and boasts miles of unspoilt walks. South of Braemar is the popular Glenshee Ski Centre, which is accessed by a main road that is the highest in the UK and surrounded on both sides by Munros.

The three Cairnwell Munros are reputed to be the easiest collection of Munros in Scotland to conquer. However, other walks in the area offer more challenging peaks and, once you are detached from the road, this is an extremely remote area.

Linn O' Dee, a short drive from the town, is a popular tourist destination and a must-see destination. This area of outstanding beauty sees the powerful River Dee course through a narrow rock gorge, making for a spectacular view of the treacherous water.

If the weather interrupts outdoor activities then Braemar Castle and Braemar Highland Heritage Centre are both open to the public.

Skiing at Glenshee nearby.
