At 1,150 feet above sea level, Tomintoul pronounced "Tom-in-towel", is the highest village in Scotland. A convenient stopping point for travellers between Braemar, Ballater and Inverness, this is a popular area with those seeking active outdoor holidays.
Standing on the road between Deeside and Speyside, the village is laid out along a gentle ridge, flanked on one side by the River Avon - famed for the clarity of its waters.

The Lecht Ski area, renowned for its snow-filled slopes, is a family-friendly snow sports centre and the compact resort has all the facilities of a larger ski centre. Activity at The Lecht is not just a winter experience. In the summer months many of the tows will take you to the summit for spectacular views over the Cairngorms. The recently refurbished Glenlivet Distillery is nearby as is the Glenlivet Estate. The turbulent history of Glenlivet reflects religious upheavals from the 16th to the 19th century. The Battle of Glenlivet in 1594 was the last stand of the Roman Catholic party, whose leaders were forced to flee the country after their defeat.
The surroundings also offer excellent salmon and trout fishing, deer stalking, grouse shooting and pony trekking. A variety of long and short walks give access to magnificent views of the eastern Cairngorms and the Cromdale Hills. There are opportunities to take part in outdoor sports including mountaineering, mountain biking and canoeing.
